Once upon a time, not too long ago in Western Massachusetts in the Berkshire Mountains region, one resourceful store owner could no longer afford his rent in a time of recession, so he turned to the community for help. He decided to issue made-up “Deli Dollars”. Basically they were IOUs for future sandwiches to help fund the move to a less expensive place. It worked. He lived to make sandwiches another day and the community rejoiced with him.
